Event Details
Come along and join the CIPS Yorkshire branch, for this face-to-face midsummer early evening informative, talk, tour, tasting, social and networking event, held in the historic setting of the Holbeck, Leeds, Flax Store building of Northern MonkBrewery Leeds Refectory Site. We have listened to feedback about events and created this unique, hybrid event.
The micro brewing/craft beer industry is worth an estimated £1.7 to £1.8 billion in revenue to the UK economy and is one of the oldest industries, hence the ‘Monk’ in the name of our host. Learn about the Northern Monk story and their journey from their inception in 2013 to the multi-site entity they are today.
See first-hand how they produce their products onsite; taste some of them and socialise and network during the course of the evening with fellow attendees.
The Chapter House venue is housed in the iconic Old Flax Store, at Northern Monk Leeds Refectory, directly above their first brewing site, located in the regenerated Holbeck area of Leeds - the spiritual heart of the industrial revolution.
Although there is a non-refundable charge for this event, it provides tremendous value for those who attend, when booking of:
£5 incl VAT (£4.17 +VAT) for members and £10 incl VAT (£8.34 +VAT)
Includes 3 x 1/3 pint glasses of beer but alcohol free or allergen options can be catered for – please state when booking if you wish to have the alcohol free or an allergen option instead of the beer.

EVENT SPEAKER
Catherine Mowatt
Production Procurement Coordinator
Northern Monk
Catherine (Cat) Mowatt started brewing by accident while travelling in Australia in 2012/2013, learning both the basics of brewing and advance drinking. She also accidently met Brian and Russell and ended up helping out the day Northern Monk first moved into their site in Leeds in 2014; found herself filling casks; and digging out the mash tun as a reward. Luckily, this training along with the occasional beer festival experience, helped to confirm that this was the industry for her.
After an unofficial apprenticeship covering everything from cleaning cask to filling cans, Catherine officially re-joined Northern Monk as a shift brewer in 2020 after 5 years as a brewery assistant at a regional brewery. Catherine worked up through the ranks to become Senior Brewer before moving into production planning and procurement and she has just celebrated her 5 year “Monk-iversary” in March 2025.
